Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The 2021-22 season came to an end for Fairfield University men's tennis this afternoon, but the Stags left much to be excited for next season, defeating Rider in the finale, 7-0.
"The season came to a close a bit earlier than expected but it was nice to finish on a high note with a win," said Head Coach Jeff Bricker. "Charlie Morkel getting to go out as a double winner was nice as well. We've got a lot of work to do but we will be back and ready next year."
Morkel opened the day with a victory at No. 3 doubles alongside Andrew Immink, 6-4, to end the year a perfect 8-0 together this season, and Morkel leading the team with 17 doubles wins overall. Jonathan Olive-Blanco and Keean Shah nabbed the top flight by the same scoreline for their 11th win as a duo, and at No. 2 doubles, Kaya Gore and Will O'Brien teamed up for a dominating, 6-1 victory to complete a Stags' sweep of the round.
In singles, Gore celebrated his senior day with a singles' win as well, taking the top flight 7-6 (10-4), 6-2, ending the season 18-4 in singles matches, with 11 wins in the No. 1 spot. His 18th wins tied Morkel for the team lead, after the graduate student ended his collegiate career in impressive fashion, dropping just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles. In the No. 3 duel, Sam Hodges collected his 16th win of the campaign, 6-1, 6-2, the third-best win total on the team.
Keean Shah picked up a straight set win at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-2 as well, and Griffin Schlesinger nabbed his 12th solo win, 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 5 duel. Andrew Immink completed the sweep for Fairfield with an impressive showing at No. 6 singles, winning 12 out of 13 games in a 6-0, 6-1 win.
As a team the Stags end the season at 9-9, and 3-3 in the MAAC, and will return all but one player from the current roster when they hit the courts again in the fall.
