BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Thirteen Stags contributed to the scoring, including seven in double figures, as Fairfield University Men's Basketball ran past visiting Medgar Evers, 110-55, in the 2021-22 home opener on Tuesday night at Webster Bank Arena.
Jalen Leach and
Makai Willis led the scoring with 14 points apiece.
Â
"I thought we were a mature team tonight. We came out of the gates like we wanted to and got on them early," said Head Coach
Jay Young. "It was great to get everybody in the game and involved, and it was good to see us put the ball in the basket."
Â
The Stags scored the game's first 18 points and never looked back, opening up a 36-6 advantage in less than 10 minutes of action. The lead never shrank closer than 30 the rest of the way and ballooned as high as 61 points. When the final horn sounded, Fairfield locked up the second largest win in program history with a 110-55 triumph.
Â
All 16 active Stags took the court for at least five minutes on Tuesday with nobody playing more than 21. Leach's 14 points included four three-pointers as the Stags knocked down 15 of their 34 attempts from distance. Fairfield shot a scorching 43-for-72 overall (59.7%).
Â
The Stags' display from downtown also included three from
Jake Wojcik en route to 13 points and three from
Taj Benning as a part of his 11-point evening. Reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week
TJ Long added 11 points for his third straight double-figure scoring game to start his career, and
Allan Jeanne-Rose matched his career high with 11 points.
Â
Jeanne-Rose also distributed a career-best eight of the Stags' 38 assists.
Caleb Green pitched in seven dimes, Leach added six and Long doled out five.
Â
The 14 points for Willis were the first of his Fairfield career.
Jack Mullally and
Jack Brown also entered the scoring column for the first time as Stags with three and two points, respectively.
Â
Willis also hauled in a team-best eight rebound and dished out two assists. His point total helped fuel the Stags' 52 points in the paint.
Chris Maidoh added 12 of those tallies, shooting 6-for-6 with six dunks over the Medgar Evers defense.
Supreme Cook was also perfect down low, converting both of his field goal attempts for four points in an abbreviated nine minutes of work.
Â
Rounding out the scoring effort, Green made both of his field goal attempts and both tries from the free throw line to net seven points, while
Jesus Cruz and
Jason Edokpayi each had four.
Â
The 55-point margin of victory was Fairfield's largest since 1958 when the Stags' established the current program record with a 109-53 win over Merrimack. The 15 three-pointers tonight were two shy of the program record established when Fairfield buried 17 treys in the 113-74 victory at Maryland Eastern Shore in 2015 (matched later that season against Bucknell). The Stags' 110 points tonight are also the most in a game for Fairfield since that win over the Hawks.
Â
Medgar Evers was led by a game-high 26 points from Keison McIntosh, who canned eight three-pointers on the day. Mousa Sinera led all players with 12 rebounds for the Cougars.
Â
Up next, the Stags make the lone road trip of the current four-game stretch with their first-ever trip to the Pitt Center this Saturday, Nov. 20 to meet Sacred Heart at 8 p.m.
Â
Action returns to Webster Bank Arena for a pair of games around the Thanksgiving holiday as the Stags host Stony Brook on Wednesday, Nov. 24 and Loyola Maryland on Sunday, Nov. 28.
