Stags Student-Athletes, Coaches Honored on MAAC 40th Anniversary Team

EDISON, N.J. – Ten standout student-athletes from Fairfield University Men's and Women's Tennis have been named to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) 40th Anniversary Team. The Stags are also represented on the ledger by two head coaching greats – Dr. Joseph Grassi and Ed Paige.
 
Dru Damico (1990-94)
Dru Damico was one half of the only two doubles MAAC Championships in program history. He claimed the 1991 doubles crown partnered with Michael McCann and won again in 1994 alongside David Briones. Damico was a starter Fairfield's 1992 MAAC Championship Team.
 
Erik Kremheller (2009-13)
Erik Kremheller compiled six All-MAAC honors in his career as a two-time All-MAAC Second Team singles player and is the only four-time All-MAAC First Team doubles competitor in program history. He is among the winningest individual players ever at Fairfield with a 73-33 (.689) singles record and an 82-42 (.661) doubles mark. As a junior, Kremheller was a pivotal member of the Stags' 2012 MAAC Championship team.
 
Michael McCann (1990-94)
Michael McCann won the only individual MAAC Championship in program history in 1991, a season in which he also claimed a MAAC Championship in doubles action alongside fellow honoree Dru Damico. A starter on the 1992 MAAC Championship Team, McCann was inducted into the Fairfield Athletics Hall of Fame in 1999.
 
Joe Michalisin (2008-12)
Joe Michalisin is Fairfield's only MAAC Player of the Year under the modern awards format, accomplishing the feat in both 2009 and 2010. He is also the Stags' only multiple time All-MAAC First Team singles player after earning the honor in 2009, 2010 and 2012. Michalisin added three All-MAAC First Team distinctions and one All-MAAC Second Team nod in his standout career.  He started in both singles and doubles on Fairfield's 2012 MAAC Championship Team. Michalisin is Fairfield's all-time winningest player at 80-40 (.667) in singles and 92-42 (.687) in doubles.
 
Dan Sauter (2008-12)
Sauter was the Most Valuable Player of the 2012 MAAC Championship after winning at No. 1 singles and doubles in both rounds of the tournament, including the championship-clinching win over the MAAC Player of the Year in the final round. He was a 2009 All-MAAC Second Team singles selection, and earned three All-MAAC doubles honors, including two years on the First Team. Sauter went 74-42 (.638) in singles play and 87-45 (.659) in doubles action in his career.
 
Melissa Gassler (1991-95)
Melissa Gassler was a force on three consecutive MAAC Championship teams from 1993-95. Individually, she was the 1993 MAAC Champion in singles and earned back-to-back MAAC Championships in doubles with Amy Hanson in 1993 and 1994. Gassler was Fairfield's Female Athlete of the Year in 1994.
 
Amy Hanson (1993-97)
Fairfield Tennis won a MAAC Championship in each of Amy Hanson's four seasons on the squad, and Hanson herself took home an individual MAAC crown in each of those campaigns. She won the MAAC Championship in singles in 1995 and claimed a trio of doubles titles – two with Melissa Gassler in 1993 and 1994 and one with Nancy Searle in 1996. Hanson was inducted into the Fairfield Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016.
 
Dana Postupack (2006-10)
Dana Postupack was an All-MAAC Second Team singles player in 2009 and 2010 and a three-time All-MAAC Doubles competitor, including two First Team nods. A two-time MAAC Champion, Postupack was the MVP of the 2010 MAAC Championship. She won 64 singles matches and a modern-era record 75 doubles contests in her career.
 
Paulina Rys (2006-10)
The 2009 MAAC Player of the Year, Paulina Rys earned First Team doubles honors in that campaign and nabbed MAAC Championship MVP laurels as the Stags won the conference crown. Fairfield went back-to-back in 2010, with Rys collecting All-MAAC First Team singles and Second Team doubles recognition. Also an All-MAAC Second Team doubles players in 2008, Rys owns the modern-era record with 77 singles win in addition to 72 doubles win.
 
Monica Yajima (2010-14)
Monica Yajima is one of the most decorated Stags in program history as a three-time MAAC Player of the Year from 2011-13.  Yajima is the only four-time All-MAAC First Team singles player in addition to 2012 First Team doubles and a pair of Second Team doubles nods. She started at No. 1 singles and doubles for Fairfield's 2012 MAAC Championship Team.
 
Head Men's Tennis Coach Dr. Joseph Grassi
Dr. Joseph Grassi was the founder of Fairfield Men's Tennis, guiding the program from its inception in 1968 until 1997. Guiding the team into the MAAC era, he led the Stags to three MAAC Championships and seven total seasons among the conference's top three teams. Grassi was the first representative of Fairfield Tennis inducted into the Fairfield Athletics Hall of Fame in 1998.
 
Head Women's Tennis Coach Ed Paige
Ed Paige led Fairfield Women's Tennis from 2006-14. He is the winningest coach in program history with 103 dual match victories and guided the Stags to the MAAC Championship in 2009, 2010 and 2012. Paige was named the MAAC Coach of the Year in back-to-back seasons in 2008 and 2009. Also the leader of Fairfield Men's Tennis, from 2006-14, Paige won the 2012 MAAC Championship and amassed 110 career victories on the men's side of the ledger.
