FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Less than 48 hours after wrapping up its 14th consecutive win – a 3-1 victory over visiting Siena on Wednesday evening – Fairfield University Volleyball will be back on the court to continue the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference schedule. The Stags head to New York for this weekend's slate, challenging Iona on Friday in New Rochelle and trekking to Riverdale to meet Manhattan on Sunday.
The Stags are currently 16-4 overall and 11-0 to hold a three-match lead atop the MAAC standings. Fairfield's win over Siena on Wednesday officially locked the Stags into a berth in the MAAC Championship for the 24th consecutive season. The 2019 edition of the championship tournament will emanate from George Bisacca Court at Alumni Hall from Nov. 22-24.
Fairfield will enter Friday as one of six teams in the nation boasting a winning streak of at least 14 matches. The current leader is Colorado State, which has strung together 20 consecutive victories en route to a 21-1 overall mark and a #14 national ranking.
Highlighting Wednesday's victory,
Manuela Nicolini distributed a season-high 57 assists, moving into fifth place on Fairfield's all-time list with 2,637 career helpers. Nicolini, who leads the MAAC and ranks 27th nationally with 10.90 assists per set this season, is 224 assists away from matching Kelly Sorensen '04 for fourth place on the ledger.
The overall program record belongs to Hall of Famer Liz Bower '00, who racked up 5,213 assists from 1996-99, while the record among setters to compete exclusively in the rally scoring era belongs to Rachel Romansky '14 with 4,552 assists from 2010-13.
Fairfield's Empire State swing this weekend will complete the home-and-home series with both Iona and Manhattan. The Stags welcomed the Gaels and Jaspers to Alumni Hall on Oct. 5-6 and took a pair of 3-0 decisions. Reigning MAAC Champion Iona is 3-19 overall and 3-9 in the MAAC this fall, while the Jaspers sport a 6-19 overall mark and a 3-9 conference tally. Manhattan will host Quinnipiac on Saturday before challenging the Stags on Sunday as a part of their Senior Day.
After this weekend on the road, the Stags will play their final three home matches of the regular season with visits from Marist (Nov. 6), Rider (Nov. 9) and Saint Peter's (Nov. 10).
