FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team will return to the George Bisacca Court at Alumni Hall for the first time in over a month when they welcome the Marist Red Foxes on Saturday at 2pm. This will be the first contest of a mini two-game home stand before the Stags head on the road for three-straight matches.
Both the Stags and the Red Foxes are coming of setbacks as the Stags dropped their last game at Rider while Marist fell short to Quinnipiac in a conference showdown on Thursday.
Fairfield had led the majority of the contest, building their lead to as many as 14 midway through the third quarter before the Broncs ended the period on a 9-0 run. The Stags withstood that Rider run by extending their lead to nine on a
Lou Lopez-Senechal high arching 3-pointer with 5:12 left in the game, but the Broncs answered with an 8-0 run before Johnson hit the game tying 3-pointer at the two minute mark and won the game with 2.8 seconds.
Khadidiatou Diouf led a trio of Stags in double figures as she tallied 16 points, 12 of those coming in the second quarter. Lopez-Senechal dropped 15 and
Casey Foley tallied 14, with that duo going perfect from long-range (5-for-5).
Lou Lopez-Senechal was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week for the first time in her career after averaging 13.5 points and 4.5 rebounds over the previous week.
In total, the freshman has poured in 48 points over her first four career games. That is the most by a Stag through her first four career games since
Casey Smith also tallied 52 during the 2014-15 season.
With Lopez-Senechal in the lineup, the Stags are averaging 58.3 points per game compared to 51.7 before joining the lineup.
Senior guard
Casey Foley is in the midst of the best offensive streak of her career, reaching double figures in six of the last seven.
During the stretch, Foley is averaging 11.3 points per game and shooting 48 percent (14-for-29) from long-range. She is also averaging 4.6 assists per game.
Despite their loss, Marist leads the MAAC in overall victories as they have racked up 10 in their first 15 games, including a victory over previous unbeaten Northeastern. Marist also holds the conference lead in points per game (69.1), field goal percentage (.425), and 3-point percentage (.368).
The Red Foxes are led by Rebekah Hand and Alana Gilmer who are currently second and third in the conference in scoring with 17.5 and 15.7 points respectively. Grance Vander Weide controls the offense with 4.2 assists per game, ranking second in the MAAC.
The Stags will stay on campus and welcome over 1,500 local elementary school kids for their next matchup against Siena on Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 11am.
