FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Over the next three weeks, Fairfield University Head Volleyball Coach
Todd Kress and his team will spend a great deal of time together as the Stags will start an extensive road trip on Wednesday night. Fairfield will play six of its next seven matches away from campus, beginning with tomorrow night's match at Marist College.
It's a good news-bad news scenario for the Stags. While they are facing a run of road games over the next 21 days, the team will be fortunate in the sense that it will host six of its final seven matches of the regular season, an added edge at a time when the Stags could be fighting for top seeding in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament .
"We simply want to be in a position where we are still in the mix at the end of this stretch and then take advantage of having 6 of our last 7 to finish off the regular season portion of MAAC play," Coach Kress said.
While the enormity of the upcoming road gauntlet may be somewhat overwhelming for most teams, Coach Kress will settle on just playing the matches as they come the team's way without looking back or looking forward on the schedule.
"This is the toughest part of our conference schedule and we will approach it one match at a time," Kress said. "We feel fortunate to currently stand at 4-0 in conference play and have many areas on which we can improve and will work to strengthen those areas over the next few weeks."
The Stags open the run of games with Marist, a team that is also unbeaten after sweeping Canisius and Niagara on the opening weekend and defeating Siena last Friday. Nikki DeSerpa paced the Red Foxes attack with 15 kills against the Saints while Sarah Austin and Megan Fergus also reached double figures with 12 kills each.
DeSerpa leads the team with 155 kills in 52 sets played which gives the junior outside hitter nearly three kills per set played. Fergus is also above the century mark at this point, registering 130 kills over 53 sets played which breaks down to 2.45 kills per set. The duo benefits from the skills of setter Taylor van der Biezen, who has amassed 426 assists this season.
Fairfield is the only team with four MAAC victories to date, hitting the mark after beating Manhattan and Iona over the weekend.
Sonja Radulovic put together a consistent weekend with 15 kills on Sunday and 14 kills on Saturday. Setter
Alexis Rich also enjoyed a strong couple of days with 47 digs and 13 digs against Iona after posting 32 assists and three digs versus Manhattan.
The match will be broadcasted on
ESPN3 beginning at 7 pm.
