FAIRFIELD, Conn. – After posting a pair of 1-0 victories to begin the season, the Fairfield University Women's Soccer team will play their first match in front of their home fans when they welcome Wagner to Lessing Field for a 7:30pm kick off. The contest will be streamed live on the NCAA Soccer Facebook page and produced by the Stags Sports Network.
The Stags will have a chance to match the best start in program history as they will be searching for their third-straight win to begin the season. Fairfield has started a season 3-0 five times in their history, with the most recent coming in 2010.
The Fairfield rookies have put the Stags in this position as they led the Stags to a pair of 1-0 victories. Freshmen
Amy Akerley and
Hanley Courter both tallied their first game-winning tallies of their collegiate careers and rookie goalkeeper
Aytana Muschajew made both slim margins hold up by recording 14 saves and two clean sheets during her first weekend. She became just the second Stag ever to start their career with back-to-back shutout victories, and the first since Julie Webb during the program's first Division I season in 1992. For her efforts, she was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Defensive Player of the Week.
The Stags are 16-8-2 in home openers, with three of those setbacks coming in the last three seasons. Their last victory to open up their home campaign came in 2014, an overtime victory against Maine.
Wagner will be playing their first road match of 2017 after suffering two home defeats, most recently a 2-1 overtime loss to Rider. The Seahawks return one of their leading goal scorers from last season in junior Maria Nunez, who was the lone player to start in all 18 matches. Nunez was the one who scored the first goal of the 2018 campaign against Rider.
All-time the Stags are 6-1 against the Seahawks, including a perfect 4-0 mark at home. Their lone setback came in 2013, a 2-1 loss on the road. Fairfield won the last matchup between the two schools, a 2-1 decision in Orono, Maine in 2015. Five current Stags played in that game with
Holly Habyan and
Alana Leahy getting the starting nod and
Jenny Jacobs,
Maggie Walsh, and
Sara Plowman coming off the bench. Jacobs led the group with five shots, two of those on target.
Fairfield will next travel to NJIT to take on the Highlanders on Sunday at 1pm.
