Stags Take Opener At UMass Lowell

LOWELL, Mass. – The Fairfield University Baseball team took the non-conference series opener at UMass Lowell with a 5-3 victory on Saturday night. Junior John Signore earned his team-leading sixth win of the season by tossing seven strong innings allowing just one run on two hits and two walks with 11 strikeouts. Senior Drew Arciuolo led the offense with his second-straight three hit contest.

Arciuolo had his hand in Fairfield's (21-25) first run scored of the night as he followed a Jack Gethings leadoff walk with a single to right center. He would force a rundown at second, allowing Gethings to scurry home to put the Stags up 1-0 in the first inning.

UMass Lowell (20-25) was able to tie up the game in their half of the first on a Steve Passatempo two out RBI double.

The rest of the game would be all Stags as they scored two runs in the fifth and two in the eighth to secure the eventual 5-3 victory. The River Hawks got back in the game with two runs in the ninth.

Anthony Boselli led off the fifth with a double to left field. Tom Ryan would sacrifice him over to third, allowing Boselli to score on a Gethings sacrifice fly. The Stags would start another rally with two outs as Arciuolo reached base with an error and would get into scoring position by stealing second. Mitch Williams brought his fellow senior classmate home with a RBI single up the middle.

The Stags would load the bases in the eighth before getting a pair of runs. Boselli brought home the first with a sacrifice fly to center and Gethings forced in a run with after being hit by a pitch.

Signore kept the Stags in the game retiring eight straight batters after allowing the run in the first inning and 14 of 15 hitters over that stretch. Signore would surrender just two hits over his seven innings of work with the RBI double in the first and an infield single in the fourth. The junior struck out 11, bringing his career total to 220 placing him third on Fairfield's all-time list.

Arciuolo was one of two Stags with multiple hits with Kevin Radziewicz picking up two.

The two teams will close out the series with a doubleheader on Sunday starting at noon.
