Baseball Powers Past the Blue Devils

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Mitch Williams provided the power and the pitching trio of Eli Oliphant, Ian Halpin, and David Sacco made the lead stick as the Fairfield University Baseball squad took a 4-1 decision at Central Connecticut State.

Oliphant would earn his second win of the season as he hurled the first five innings for the Stags (7-13) surrendering three hits and striking out four. For the sophomore, it was his sixth appearance of the year, and the fourth where he has not allowed a run. Oliphant retired the first seven batters he faced before giving up a single in the third. That runner would be quickly erased as Oliphant forced a 6-4-3 double play.

It took the Stags until the sixth inning to get on the board as the middle of the order started a two-out rally. Dan Ryan singled to advance Kevin Radziewicz to second and Williams cleared the bases with a three-run homer to right field, his second homer of the season.

That would allow Oliphant to record the victory after he was replaced by Halpin to begin the sixth. The side-armer did not allow a run during his three innings of work, striking out four during the stretch.

After allowing the first run of the game by allowing the first three hitters of the ninth to reach base, Sacco settled down and retired the next three batters to earn the save.

The Stags would add an insurance run in the ninth on a Drew Arciuolo RBI single, the third-straight for the Stags after Tom Ryan and Dylan Reynolds started the frame.

Nine different Stags collected at least one hit with Williams and Tim Zeng leading the team with a pair. Fairfield is back in action when they open up the home portion of their 2018 slate when they host Niagara for a three-game series starting Friday at noon.
