JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jack Gethings collected three hits and
John Signore struck out seven in his six innings of work, but it was not enough as the Fairfield University Baseball team dropped a 5-1 decision to the Jacksonville Dolphins in the second game of a three-game series.
Gethings collected the first hit for the Stags (4-10) with a two out single in the first innings.
Kevin Radziewicz followed with another single, but Jacksonville's (12-8) starter Tyler Santana was able to get out of trouble with a strikeout. That would be the last run scoring chance for the Stags until the fourth inning, as Santana retired seven-straight hitters.
The Dolphins would score in each of their first three innings, highlighted by a two-run single by Austin Garrastazu in the third.
Fairfield scored their lone run in the fourth as Gethings led off the frame with a single, snapping Santana's streak of seven-straight outs.
Drew Blake would add a one-out single, advancing Gethings to second. Gethings would then go to third on a passed ball and score on a wild pitch.
Signore would settle down after allowing the two-run single by retiring seven-straight hitters, two by the strike out, but John Casalla would cap the Dolphins scoring with a home run to lead off the sixth.
The Stags had one more chance to get back into the game, loading the bases with a
Drew Arciuolo single, a Gethings walk, and a Radziewicz single, but Chris Palmer was able to get out of the jam with a strikeout.
Gethings went 3-for-3 in the setback, followed by a 2-for-4 showing from Radziewicz. In the bullpen,
Peter Horn and
Ian Halpin combined for two scoreless innings.
The Stags and the Dolphins will close out their three-game series tomorrow at noon.
