Men's Tennis Set to Compete at Yale Invitational

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men's tennis team takes the short trip to New Haven this weekend for the Yale Invitational. The team will take on Marist, Stony Brook, and Yale over the course of the weekend beginning on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.

The Stags are coming off another close defeat by the hands of UConn, 4-3. Fairfield took a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. Brad Orban and Anthony Caputo earned a 7-6 win at No. 1 and Jeffrey Rodgers paired with Tyler Shibles for a 6-3 win at No. 2. 

In singles action, the Huskies took control of the match winning four of the six points. Orban grabbed his fifth straight singles win at No. 1 (6-1, 6-2). And in the second spot, Caputo picked up a three set win (1-6, 6-1, 7-6). 

Orban picked up his second straight MAAC Player of the Week recognition after his 2-0 week.

Taking a look at the Stags' three opponents this weekend, Yale is 8-3 overall this season and riding a four-match win streak heading into the weekend. On March 5, they defeated Brown, 5-2. The Bulldogs earned the doubles point after posting wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Then in singles action, Tyler Lu, Ziqi Wang, Dylan King, and Stefan Doehler secured the victory at the top four singles spots.

The Red Foxes are 4-1 on the season and have won their last three matches. Most recently they topped Wagner (5-0) and Fordham (4-1) on February 19.  No. 1 singles player, Javier Restrepo was 2-0 on the day with two straight set victories for Marist.

Stony Brook sits at 2-2 on the season and last split a weekend trip to West Point with Army and Bryant. The Seawolves fell 4-0 to Army, but turned around to top Bryant 4-0. The doubles duo of Tyler Hoffman and Rodrigo Hadlich earned victories against both Army and Bryant by the same score of 6-4. Samuel Taieb, Hadlich, and Finn Kemper grabbed singles victories over the Bulldogs to secure the match win.

Fairfield heads to sunny Orlando, Florida next to face Liberty on Wednesday, March 15.
