FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University women's soccer team will close out a mini two-game road swing when they take the short trek down I-95 to take on the Iona Gaels with kick-off coming on Saturday at 1pm. This is the second MAAC road game for the Stags who will compete in two more conference matches away from home during the next two weeks.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: The Stags suffered their third-straight 2-1 conference lost by surrendering two first half goals on the road against Quinnipiac. Fairfield was able to cut into the deficit in the second frame when Melanie Hingher recorded her first career goal on a pass from Jenny Jacobs, but the Stags were unable to find the equalizer. Fairfield had some opportunities in the waning minutes, but Hingher's header on a corner kick from Jenn Wahlig was off the mark. The Stags defense improved in the setback, allowing nine Quinnipiac shots, just one coming in the second half.
FAIRFIELD VS IONA: The Stags will be looking to avenge last year's 4-3 loss to Iona, the Gaels first win over Fairfield in four seasons. During the last three years, three current Stags have scored a goal in the series with Cassidy Boegel and Anna Borea touching the back of the net last season and Molly Moran notching a goal during her freshman campaign. Pamela Coufos is the only current Stag to dish out an assist against the Gaels, picking up her tally in a 3-0 victory in 2014. All-time, the Stags are 17-4-4 against the Gaels and have not lost on the road to the Gaels since 2004.
THE IONA SCOUTING REPORT: The Gaels have started their MAAC season with a 1-2 record, but have scored four goals over their first three contests, including a 2-0 win over Saint Peter's. Junior goalkeeper Tiffany Martinez has racked up the saves in the early season with 70 stops, the seventh best number in the country. Five different Gaels have recorded a goal this year, with their top goal scorer from 2015 Charlotte Stuart tying the team lead with three points.
UP NEXT: The Stags will celebrate the first-ever MAAC Women's Soccer “Kids Day Out” when they take on Saint Peter's with an early start time of 11am. Over 200 kids from the area's school will be in attendance.
