GRASONVILLE, Md. – Eric Austin and Kevin Duncan each carded a final round 73 as the Fairfield University men's golf team surged to a third-place finish at the Towson Invitational. The Stags led all 16 teams with a 302 on Sunday; Fairfield posted a tournament-best 10-stroke improvement from Saturday to Sunday at the Prospect Bay Country Club.
The Stags climbed from 10th place after Saturday's round into a third-place tie with St. John's at 614. The Stags and Red Storm were five strokes behind second-place Drexel and nine shots off the pace set by tournament winner Georgetown. Fairfield bested MAAC foes Siena (617) and Rider (629) as well as in-state rival Sacred Heart (643).
The 73 (+1) rounds turned in by Austin and Duncan trailed Bryant's McKinley Slade by two strokes for the best Sunday showing. Overall, Austin carded a 148 to finish fifth and Duncan posted a 149. Thomas Urciuoli added a 160 for Fairfield, Kellen Jordan turned in a 161 and Alex Ferrante finished with a 165 in the 36-hole affair.
Georgetown was led to the team crown by a third-place 147 (71-76) fired by Harrison Rhoads. Medalist honors went to Drexel's Christopher Crawford with a 145 (69-76) guided by the lowest round of the tournament on Saturday with an opening-day 69.
Fairfield's upcoming spring schedule features three one-day tournaments prior to the 2016 MAAC Championship set for April 22-24 at Disney's Magnolia Golf Course in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
