LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – Eric Austin finished tied for third place with a three-day score of 219 (+3) to lead the Fairfield University men's golf team at the 2016 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship. The Stags finished in a fifth-place tie on the team leaderboard at Disney's Magnolia Golf Course in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
Austin wrapped up his third-place performance with a 73 (+1) on Sunday. Freshmen Kevin Duncan and Thomas Urciuoli each carded a 231 (+15), with Alex Ferrante and Kellen Jordan both finishing at 233 (+17). Ferrante (76) and Jordan (75) both turned in their best rounds of the weekend on Sunday.
The Stags posted a 908 at the 54-hole tournament to tie with defending champion Saint Peter's in fifth place. In a tightly contested event, just nine strokes separated third-place Rider (902) from eighth-place Canisius (911).
Pulling away from the field were Siena and Manhattan, who finished tied atop the leaderboard at 890. The Saints (284) and Jaspers (290) turned in the two best rounds of the weekend on Sunday to enter a one-hole playoff, which was won by Siena to claim the 2016 MAAC Championship.
Nicholas Dilio of Saint Peter's topped the individual leaderboard this year with a 212 (-4). Dilio was only golfer to finish below par for the tournament. He won the crown by five strokes over Manhattan's Ryan Lynch (217). Austin was one of three golfers tied for third place at 219. He shared the spot with Siena's Michael Christifulli, who had the tournament's low round with a 69 on Sunday, and 2015 medalist Kevin Kramarski of Iona.
