FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Head Coach Jim O'Brien has preached to the team to play for pride and finish the season strong. The team has taken that message to heart as they enter Wednesday night's season finale at Manhattan fresh off their two best performances of the season. With a draw against Monmouth and a win against Rider, the Stags will have a chance to finish 2016 with a three game unbeaten streak when they travel to Riverdale, N.Y., to take on the Manhattan Jaspers on Wednesday at 7pm.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Brenna Brown made her Senior Day even more memorable by scoring the eventual game-winning goal with less than two minutes remaining to push the Stags to a 1-0 victory over Rider. Brown's tally came with about 100 seconds left to play when Julia McGuire played a ball to the right side and tapped it over to Brown. Dribbling around three defenders allowed Brown to find empty space on her left side and she was able to slide the ball passed the goalkeeper for the game's only score. Defensively, the Stags were able to keep their second-straight opponent off the board and extend their scoreless streak to 221-straight minutes with the shutout against Rider. Sophomore goalkeeper Megan DeFeo made six saves in net helping her take home her first career MAAC Defensive Player of the Week award.
FAIRFIELD VS MANHATTAN: The Stags are unbeaten in their last 13 games against the Jaspers, but that is not to say the games have not been closer. Four of the last eight games have ended in a draw (the Stags advanced on penalty kicks in the 2013 MAAC Tournament). The last and only loss in the series came on the road in 2004. Pamela Coufos is the Stags active leader against the Jaspers with two goals, scoring in her freshman and sophomore seasons. Faith Daley and Jenny Jacobs have also tallied goals in the series with Elena Santos picking up an assist last season.
THE JASPERS SCOUTING REPORT: Just like the Stags, this will be the final game of the 2016 season for the Jaspers. Offensively, the squad is led by their senior Erica Modena who was named to the All-MAAC First Team last season and is the team's leader with four goals this year. Their defensive unit is led by senior Jenny Bitzer, the reigning MAAC Defensive Player of the Year. Bitzer, who is from Germany, is also one of 30 candidates around the country to be chosen as a Senior Class nominee.
UP NEXT: See you in 2017!
