Stags? Streak Stopped By Central Connecticut

Box Score

NEW BRITIAN, Conn.  The Fairfield University's women's soccer six-game unbeaten streak came to an end on Sunday as the Stags fell to Central Connecticut State 3-0.  The six-game streak was the largest for the program since 2008.

The Blue Devils (4-3-2) struck early in the first half and just 15 minutes into the game when Julie Lavoie took a pass from Cailynn Harding that drew the keeper out and made for an empty net to put the home side up early.

The Stags (6-2-1) would take two shots in the next ten minutes, but Jessica Broadbent's opportunity missed high and Ashley Small's chance was saved by goalkeeper Nikki Turley.  Both teams would exchange shots but neither side could touch the back of the net for the remainder of the first half.

Central Connecticut would start the second half picking up an early goal, this time only three minutes after the first whistle.  Claire Walsh connected with the back of the net taking a shot from the 18-yard box to put the Blue Devils up two.

The Stags were then forced to pick up the momentum which they did.  Over the next 15 minutes, Fairfield would tally six corner kicks, including four straight, but were whistled for two offsides which kept the momentum in Central Connecticut's favor.

Fairfield's defense would keep Central Connecticut off the board until the 80th minute when leading scorer Tori Sousa capped off the scoring with her third goal of the season, this one coming off a free kick.

Small led the Stags with four of the team's eight shots including two on goal.  The Blue Devils scored three goals on 13 chances.  Fairfield held a sizable 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.  Sophia DeVita, who made her first start of the season, had a career-high six saves, a number that equaled the amount of saves she had the prior two seasons.

Fairfield will open up Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play on Saturday September 27 against Rider on Lessing Field with kickoff scheduled for 7pm.  The conference match will be streamed live on FairfieldStags.TV.  Tickets are available for every women's soccer home game online.  Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for seniors and youths.
