Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University volleyball team suffered their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) loss of the season, falling to Manhattan College 3-2 (25-23, 25-8, 20-25, 21-25, 12-15) this afternoon in Alumni Hall.
Three Stags had double-doubles on the day. Freshman Megan Theiller had her second-consecutive double-double and fourth of the season with a career-high 17 kills and 15 digs. Junior Hadley Orr had her first double-double of the season with 10 kills and 13 digs to go along with a career-high six total blocks. Setter Carsen Mata had her fifth double-double of the year with 24 assists and 16 digs.
Sophomore Megan O'Sullivan had 11 kills and three total blocks while senior Lindsay Weaver added nine kills, three total blocks, and three aces. Senior Camille Coffey notched 24 digs and three aces, tying a career high.
The first set was close with 10 ties and three lead changes. Trailing 15-14, a kill by Orr tied things up. Rookie Sydney Buckley then stepped to the line and served four consecutive points for the Stags to open up a 19-15 lead. The Jaspers used a late run to tie the frame 23-23. Fairfield, however, took advantage of a Manhattan attack error while Weaver closed out the set with a kill.
The Stags dominated the second set, hitting .417 with 12 kills and just two errors in 24 attempts. Mata set the tone by serving the first three points and Fairfield cruised to the 25-8 win.
Manhattan (8-4; 2-0 MAAC) trailed 4-1 in the third set when Malia McGuinness stepped back to serve seven unanswered points to put the Jaspers on top. Fairfield pulled within 12-11 on an ace by Coffey, but Manhattan used a quick 3-0 run. The Jaspers held the Stags off the rest of the way in the 25-20 win.
Fairfield appeared to have the fourth set in-hand, leading 21-15. But, the Jaspers' Marissa Behrens changed momentum with a kill. Allie Yamashiro then served the final nine points of the stanza for the 25-21 Manhattan victory. In the fifth set, Manhattan opened up a 14-9 lead. The Stags held off match-point three times before a kill from Claire Van Dyke gave the Jaspers the 15-12 win. It was the first-ever victory for Manhattan in Alumni Hall. The Jaspers had lost 16 straight contests on the Stags home court.
Buckley had 14 assists for the Stags. For the Jaspers, setter Teodora Peric had 28 assists, 23 digs, seven kills, and four total blocks while Sydney Volovski had a team-high 10 kills.
Fairfield (5-7; 1-1 MAAC) has a quick turnaround as it heads to Marist College on September 24 at 7pm. It is the first meeting between the two squads since the 2013 MAAC Championship final in which that Stags topped the Red Foxes, 3-0. Fairfield returns home to Alumni Hall on September 27 to host Quinnipiac University at 1pm.
