LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – The Fairfield University women's golf team finished tied for fifth place at the 2014 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships. The Stags shot a combined 1,016 (342-331-343) on the par-72, 6,006-yard Disney's Palm Golf Course.
Sophomore Michelle Applegate was the top finisher for Fairfield. She shot her best round of the tournament, taking ten strokes off her second round score, to card a 77. Applegate finished with a three-day score of 242 (78-87-77) to tie for second overall. She was only three strokes shy of individual leader Kylie Strijek from Siena.
Junior Emma Ritzmann finished with a final score of 249 (82-77-90) to tie for seventh with two other competitors. Junior Katie Rockwell shot an 84 in the final round, to climb up four places since yesterday and tie for 22nd overall with a 260 (93-83-84).
Rookie Jackie Schofield posted a pair of 89s and a final round score of 92 to card a total 270. Schofield finished in 34th overall. Classmate Danielle Dalsessandro placed 35th overall with a three-day score of 273 (95-84-94).
Siena shot a 978 (319-323-336) to capture the 2014 MAAC Championship title. Quinnipiac was the runner-up with a 1,005 (340-335-330) while Albany was a close third, posting a 1,007 (343-332-332). Monmouth followed in fourth with a final 1,012 (342-336-334). Hartford tied for fifth, with the Stags, posting a 1,016 (350-339-327) while Niagara followed in seventh with a final 1,034 (341-348-345).
The Stags have now concluded their 2013-14 campaign. Fairfield competed in nine events this year and captured the Navy Spring Classic title. Applegate, Catherine Brabazon, Olivia Brooks, Sara Quinn, Kate Heffernan, Ritzmann, and Rockwell were all named to the All-MAAC Academic Team last Thursday. To be eligible for the MAAC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must complete two semesters at their institution and hold a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a 4.0 scale.
