Box Score RIVERDALE, N.Y. -- The Fairfield University volleyball team saw its six-game win streak come to an end as ManhattanCollege edged the Stags by a 3-2 count this afternoon. Caitlin Stapleton posted a match-high 20 kills while Hadley Orr added 18 kills for Fairfield.
“Today was just a great college volleyball match,” Fairfield Head Coach Todd Kress said. “Both teams fought through adversity and made huge plays when their teams needed them. I give credit to Manhattan for great defensive effort when it was needed most. I'm also very proud of our kids as we fought back from two sets down and through the adversity of a key injury”
The Jaspers opened the match by winning the first two sets but it was a struggle as the Stags battled back in each of those sets. In the first set, Fairfield rallied from being down a pair of points late at 18-16, 20-18 and 24-22 to tie the set on each occasion. A kill from Stapleton and an attack error by the Jaspers helped Fairfield fight off two set points and tied the game at 24-24. The score remained tied at 25, 26 and 27 before Malia McGuinness registered a pair of kills to end the set in Manhattan's favor.
In the second set, Fairfield fell behind by five points early at 10-5 before the team rallied to tie the score at 12-12. Manhattan held a slight lead at 16-15 before the Stags scored five straight points with two coming from Hadley Orr. Manhattan responded by scoring six of the next seven points to tie the game at 21-21. The Jaspers would go on to win the set, 25-22.
After an early Fairfield 2-0 lead, Manhattan would fight back to tie its own two-point edge at 12-10. The Stags put together three straight points to take a 13-12, the last of which came from Lindsey Weaver. Manhattan would stay close and tie the set at 15-15 before Fairfield took control with five straight points to keep command at 20-15. The Stags would eventually build upon that lead and win the third set by a 25-17 score.
The fourth set started with a Manhattan point but Fairfield responded with four points to grab a 4-1 advantage. The Stags would not trail the rest of the way and would go on to win the set 25-20 and tie the match at 2-2.Orr finished the victory by registering the final three points for the Stags.
The Stags scored the first two points of the fifth set off a kill from Hadley and a Manhattan attack error. The lead remained at two points, 3-1, but Manhattan erased that deficit by putting up five of the next six points to grab a two-point advantage 6-4.Fairfield would take the lead one last time at 8-7 as a pair of Weaver kills ended the run for Fairfield. The Jaspers scored the next five points to make it an 11-8 Jasper lead. Manhattan would go on to win the set and the match with a 15-12 decision.
“We will regroup this weekend and continue to get better as we prepare for a great senior weekend,” Kress said.
The Stags will complete the regular season next weekend by hosting Niagara on Saturday and Canisius on Sunday. Both matches will start at 1 pm at Alumni Hall. The Canisius match will be Senior Day as the volleyball program celebrates the careers of the Class of 2015.
