Coffey Makes History, Stags Top Saint Peter?s

Box Score

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Stags' senior Camille Coffey became the 14th Stag in program-history to reach the 1,000 dig milestone as Fairfield won their third-straight match, topping Saint Peter's 3-1 (25-16, 25-23, 24-26, 25-23).  The three match winning streak ties a season-high for Fairfield.

"1,000 digs is a great accomplishment," Head Coach Todd Kress said. "The entire team is happy for Camille on such an accomplishment and that it came during a road win."

Fairfield (9-9, 5-3 MAAC) did not trail in the first set.  Megan O'Sullivan continued her hot hitting with two kills on zero errors in the first game. Fairfield only needed seven team digs in the first frame, forcing Saint Peter's (5-11, 2-5 MAAC) to hit -.071.  The Stags took the lead for good in the frame when Megan Theiller connected on a kill to put the Stags up 5-4.

The Stags held a comfortable lead in the second set but let it slip away.  Fairfield led by as many as 10 with the score 23-13, but Saint Peter's used momentum after a kill by Lauren Behrens to pull off a 10-1 run and cut the deficit to one, 24-23.  The Stags had six of their seven attack errors in that span to allow the Peacocks to charge back.  Theiller gave the squad a sigh of relief when she recorded her ninth kill of the set to give the Stags a narrow 25-23 victory.  Hadley Orr also contributed to her stat line by posting four kills on seven swings and not committing an error.

The third set was the closest contested of the match and featured 10 ties and three lead changes.  The Peacocks would take their first set over the Stags in seven years, snapping Fairfield's 20-set winning streak against the Jersey City side.  The Stags took the lead late after a kill by Orr put Fairfield up 24-23, and the Stags were serving for match point.  The Peacocks would force extra time and find three straight points to take the set 26-24.  Dayana Arrufat led all players with seven kills on a .636 hitting percentage.  Coffey reached the milestone during the set, having a match-high eight digs during the frame.

The fourth set would turn out to be the final one of the match, but it looked like the Peacocks would force a fifth set.  Saint Peter's jumped out to a 10-2 lead after five attack errors by the Stags.  The Stags trailed by as many as nine points with the score 19-10 after a kill by Amanda Colombo.  Fairfield would battle back and go on a 14-3 run that set up another match point.  Theiller led the way again for the Stags, with seven kills in the frame.  Bella Guanciale served for six straight points to give the Stags the lead.  Theiller and the Stags capped off the day with a kill, which would be the 21st for the freshman.

"Megan had a very steady game for us and her success this year stems from obvious reasons," Kress said.  "She is disciplined in her approach to every practice and match and is a student of the game."

For the match, the Stags allowed only two service aces, both coming in the final frame.  Caitlin Stapleton had six kills on a .385 hitting percentage in her first game back from an injury.  Carsen Mata had a match-high 48 assists, Theiller had a career-high 21 kills, and Coffey tied for the match-high with 21 digs.

"We are all excited to get back at it in practice on Tuesday and turn some of our weaknesses from this past weekend into strengths," Kress said.

The Stags stay on the road when they travel to Buffalo, N.Y. to take on Canisius and Niagara next weekend.
