Stags Capture Invitational Crown With Overtime Vic

The Fairfield University women's soccer team earned a 2-1 overtime win over visiting College of the Holy Cross on Sunday afternoon. The victory improves the Stags to 3-3-0 on the year, while the Crusaders fall to 0-5-2.

Nikki Stanton (North Bend, Wash.) sent a corner kick to the near post where Ashley Small (Melville, N.Y.) headed the ball into the back of the net 3:04 into the extra period. It marks the third consecutive game-winning goal for Small who now has four tallies on the year.

Fairfield finished with a 19-7 advantage in shots but was trailing 1-0 in the 57th minute when Ally Pasquariello (Suffield, Conn.) converted a penalty kick. Stanton brought the Stags level in the 67th minute when she netted her own PK, after Small was taken down inside the box.

Sophia DeVita (Westfield, N.J.) earned the win for the Stags as she made save in her first collegiate start. Carly McCabe (Barrington, R.I.) made six saves for the Crusaders in her 93:04 of action.

The game was the finale of the 2013 Fairfield Women's Soccer Invitational, which the Stags captured going 2-0-0. In the earlier game the University of Hartford defeated American University 1-0. Stanton, who played every minute of both games for the Stags, and had a goal and an assist today, was named the Most Valuable Player. She was joined by Small and Emma Pichl (New York, N.Y.) on the All-Tournament Team.

Hartford, 1-0-1 on the weekend, had freshman keeper Jessica Jurg, freshman back Amanda Hamilton and junior midfielder Chanel Johnson named to the team. Holy Cross was represented by Pasquariello, junior midfielder Gina Righini and sophomore midfielder Megan Greineder, while American had junior back Kirsten Eriksen, freshman midfielder Marley Jennings and junior forward Lindsay Muri recognized.

The Stags return to action on Friday with a 7 p.m. game at Central Connecticut State University.
