Men's Golf Tied For Fifth After Opening Round of W

Day One Results

The Fairfield University men's golf team opened play at the Whiting Turner Towson Invitational with a team round of 105, +17, good for a fifth place tie with Indiana University of Pennsylvania.  The Stags trail Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Loyola Maryland, which is in third place, by three strokes, and 18-hole leader William & Mary by 14 strokes.

The tournament, which continues today, is being played at Prospect Bay Golf Course in Grasonville, Md. There are 123 players that completed the first round from 24 teams, including MAAC opponents, Siena, Canisius, Saint Peter's and Iona.

The Stags opening round was fueled by +3 rounds of 75 from Eric Johnson and Nick Taylor.  That effort has the duo in a seven-way tie for 13th place and seven strokes off of the leaded, Jeremy Wells of William & Mary, who shot a -4 68 on Sunday.

Ricky Dowling was one stroke back of his teammates with an 18-hole score of +4, 76, and is one of 13 players that is tied for 21st place entering the second round. Steve Burak is +7, 79, entering play on Monday, tied with nine others for 55th place.  Scott Rainaud is part of a 14 player tie for 65th place at +8, 80, after 18 holes.

The course was dry for the morning pairings, but the afternoon groups dealt with rain and wind.  Better weather is expected for Monday's second round.
