The Fairfield University women's soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women's Soccer Championship on the strength of a 4-2 edge in penalty kicks on Friday. The Stags and Manhattan College played to a 0-0 tie through double-overtime.

The result moves the Stags record to 11-6-2 on the year, while the Lady Jaspers finish the season at 6-12-2. The tournament is being played at ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Fla.

The Stags were perfect in their four PK attempts. Megan O'Brien (West Hartford, Conn.) started the Stags with a shot into the upper left corner. Nikki Stanton (North Bend, Wash.) followed with a ball in the center of the goal that ticked off the hand of Manhattan goalkeeper Kristen Skonieczny. Manhattan missed its first two kicks high, and in the third round Aislinn McIlvenny converted into the lower right corner. Jess Broadbent (North Haven, Conn.) answered with a score straight on to make it 3-1. Kaelyn Angelo converted the Jaspers fourth shot to make it 3-2, when Pam Coufos (North Andover, Mass.) stepped up to the penalty spot and put the ball into the lower left corner for the win.

The Stags controlled play during the game, out shooting Manhattan 22-5 on the afternoon and with a 7-0 edge in shots on goal. Skonieczny made seven saves in the contest to preserve the shutout for the Jaspers. Kathleen Early (Rockville Center, N.Y.) and the Stags defense recorded their ninth clean sheet of the season.

Fairfield will play in the 2 p.m. semifinal on Sunday and take on #6 Siena College. The Saints upset third-seeded Iona 2-1 Friday morning. The match will air live on ESPN3.
