POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Fairfield University men's and women's cross country teams opened their 2011 campaign with strong second place finishes at the Marist Invitational at Bowdoin Park this morning.
In the women's 5.3K, freshman
Danielle Renzi was the Stags top-finisher, posting a time of 21:47 to place seventh overall in her collegiate debut. Renzi led a tight pack of Fairfield runners. Junior
Sam Goodnow placed eighth with a time of 22:00 while freshman
Maureen Crimmins was ninth in 22:02. Senior
Kristen Golen was 10th with a time of 22:05 while sophomore
Molly Leidig was 11th in 22:09.

Kelly Kramer posted a time of 22:23. Seniors
Emily Davis and
Caroline Riley both crossed the finish line in 22:32. Junior
Meghan Sullivan clocked a time of 22:37 and was followed by senior
Lauren Londregan in 22:39, sophomore
Danica Ceballos in 22:44, freshman
Cate Forte in 22:56, and sophomore
Juli Bassett in 23:18.
Marist won the event with 15 points while the Stags were next with 45. Saint Peter's (92) took third place while Manhattanville (103) finished fourth. The Red Foxes' Michelle Gaye won the event with a time of 20:22
For the men, in his collegiate debut, freshman Connor Kelley was the first Stag across the line, placing sixth overall with a time of 17:15 in the 5.3K event. Classmate Jake Ruskan was seventh in 17:19 while sophomore Brian Cleary was eighth with a time of 17:20. Senior Matt Brunelle was ninth overall in 17:22. Junior Kyle Short placed 11th overall with a time of 17:27 while sophomore
Howie Rosas was 12th in 17:28. Sophomore John Lobo rounded out the Stags top-seven finishers with a time of 17:34.
Freshman Kyle Wegner had a time of 17:49 in his first collegiate event. Junior Greg Chase posted a time of 18:03 and was followed by senior Vin Ferrer in 18:19, junior Dylan Fisher in 18:24, freshman Sam Tooley in 18:36, and junior Ernie Lustenring in 20:12.
Marist, ranked eighth in the region by the USTFCAA, won the event with 19 points while Fairfield was second with 36 points. Saint Peter's placed third with 89 points while Manhattanville was fourth with 107. The Red Foxes' Arquimedes DelaCruz was the overall winner with a time of 16:56.29.
Fairfield returns to action on September when it travels to Van Cortlandt Park for the Iona Meet of Champions.
