FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men's cross country team successfully defended their title at the Victor F. Leeber, S.J. Invitational while the women's cross country team placed third.
The women's team was led by freshman
Maureen Crimmins who finished sixth overall with a time of 19:32.03 in the 5K. Freshman
Danielle Renzi placed ninth overall with a time of 19:43.32 while senior
Kristen Golen was 13th with a time of 20:01.49. Freshman
Cate Forte was 16th in a time of 20:12.50. Senior
Emily Davis was 20th with a time of 20:16.62 while classmate
Lauren Londregan was right on her heels with a time of 20:17.26.
Senior
Caroline Riley had a time of 20:23.68 and was followed by sophomore
Molly Leidig with a personal best of 20:29.33, junior
Sam Goodnow in 20:30.35, junior
Meghan Sullivan in 20:30.76, sophomore
Danica Ceballos with a personal best of 21:00.62, sophomore
Hillary Maxson in 21:05.20, senior
Kelly Kramer in 21:27.64, sophomore
Juli Bassett in 21:39.89 and senior
Nikki Livesey 21:54.93.
Sacred Heart's Brittany Lane was the women's individual champion, finishing in a time of 18:41.06. The Pioneers won their second-straight Leeber Invitational team title, finishing with 23 points. St. John's University was the runner-up with 51 points while Fairfield was third with 63.
Freshman
Connor Kelley was the overall champion in a men's 8K, finishing with a time of 26:37.56 while sophomore
Howie Rosas was the runner-up in 26:39.71. Kelley led for much of the race until Rutgers Chris Banafato pulled ahead entering the final turn. Kelley caught up to Banafato and passed him just as the Scarlet Knight stumbled to the ground. Banafato ended up finishing in third place with a time of 26:43.43.05.
Sophomore
Brian Cleary finished sixth overall with a personal best of 27:02.25 while freshman
Jake Ruskan was tenth in a time of 27:25.11. Sophomore
John Lobo placed 11th in 27:26.10 while senior
Vin Ferrer was 12th overall in 27:28.06. Junior
Greg Chase was 20th overall with a time of 27:50.14 while senior
Matt Brunelle was right behind him in 27:51.24.
Senior
Steve Flanagan finished in a time of 28:14.08 and was followed by freshmen
Sam Tooley and
Kyle Wegner in 28:16.13 and 28:17.22, respectively. Junior
Kyle Short finished in 28:52.96, junior
Dylan Fisher clocked a time of 29:10.63, junior M
att Boley finished in 30:09.99, and junior
Ernie Lustenring finished in 30:55.80.
Fairfield finished with 30 team points to win its second-straight team title. Fordham was the runner-up with 68 points while Rutgers was third with 92 points.
Fairfield returns to action on September 30 at the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh University.
