FAIRFIELD, Conn.-- The Fairfield University field hockey team announced two changes to this weekend's schedule. The Stags are playing Saint Joseph's University on Saturday, but the game will be played on the campus of Drexel University beginning at 11:30 am. The game is considered Saint Joseph's home game.
The Stags' game on Sunday against Drexel was moved to Monday because of weather reports associated with Hurricane Irene. The game time will be announced later today. The game was originally slated for Sunday at noon.
Head Coach
Jackie Kane brings her team into the 2011 season after leading the team to a nine-win season, the most victories since the 2001 squad posted 11 wins. Fairfield returns its top scorer in
Marit Westenberg, who tallied 28 points in 19 games a year ago. The senior led the team with 11 goals and was tied for second with six assists.
Fairfield lost its other three double-digit scorers to graduation with
Christy Starsinic representing the next top returning scorer. The sophomore registered five points in her freshman season with two goals and five assists. She was the top scoring freshman in 2010, beating Hilary Fitts and
Jill Keeney by a point.
The team also welcomes back both goalkeepers from a year ago, namely
Maddy Sposito and
Caitlin O'Donnell. Sposito finished the year with a 2.32 goals against average and a .748 save percentage. She posted more than 1,100 minutes between the posts, making 110 saves in her 17 appearances. O'Donnell owned a 1.19 goals against average with 13 saves in five games. She recorded the team's lone shutout of the season, a 1-0 victory against Siena.
Saint Joseph's and Drexel will provide challenges for the Stags this weekend. The Hawks finished the 2010 campaign with a 6-13 overall record and a 3-4 mark in the competitive Atlantic 10 conference. The team graduated its top four scorers but has five seniors ready to pick up the offense. Therese Doyle is one of those five seniors and represents the team's top returning scorer. Doyle tallied nine points with four goals and an assist last year. Liz Messaros is the returning goalkeeper, appearing in five games as a reserve a year ago.
Drexel, which plays St. Joseph's on Friday, enters the upcoming year as a nationally-ranked team after winning 15 of 20 games last season. The Dragons are ranked 18th in the NFHCA Preseason National Poll, sandwiched between two more Fairfield opponents - 17th-ranked Albany and 19th-ranked Boston University.
The team lost their top three scorers following the 2010 season, so look to Amanda Fleischut to pick up the slack offensively. Fleischut tallied 17 points with five goals and seven assists in 19 games. Sofia Sanguinetti led all Drexel student-athletes with 10 assists last year.
