Emhardt Decides Win Over Marist

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University women's tennis team improved to 8-7 and 4-0 in conference play this evening with its thrilling 4-3 victory over visiting Marist College. The match was tied at three when darkness hit as freshman Caroline Emhardt's match was 5-5 in the third set. The fourth singles match was then moved and carried out at Stamford Indoor Tennis Center where Emhardt prevailed over Marielle Campbell 7-5, 5-7, 7-6(6) to clinch the victory for the Stags.

In doubles play, Fairfield's duo of Alyssa Ruiz and Victoria Pirrello blanked Retta Byron and Kayla O'Donovan 8-0 at third doubles. Monica Yajima and Emhardt were unable to hold off Kelsey Raynor and Erin McCarthy, and fell in a close 8-6 match at first doubles, while Sharissa Ryan and Kristen Liu were topped by Joanna Sun and Marielle Campbell in a tough fought 9-8(4) match in the No. 2 spot.

Yajima continued her solid singles play by defeating Kelsey Raynor at first singles in a three-set 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 match while Ryan also defeated Marist's Erin McCarthy 6-4, 6-4 in the second spot. At No. 3 singles, Liu fell to Joanna Sun in a tight 6-4 7-6(4) match, while Ruiz topped Kayla O'Donovan 6-3, 6-4 at fifth singles. Rounding out the scoring for the Stags was Victoria Pirrello who was defeated by Jeannie Lukin 6-0, 6-0 in the sixth position.

The women's tennis team returns to play April 10 when they host non-conference Providence in a 10am match on the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts.
