Fairfield was unable to capture the point in doubles play as two of the three matches were played out. Marist's Kelsey Raynor and Erin McCarthy edged freshmen duo of
Monica Yajima and
Caroline Emhardt, 8-6, in the top spot. At the No. 3 position, Jeannie Lukin and Retta Byron topped
Alyssa Ruiz and
Victoria Pirrello, 8-5. Stag pair of
Sharissa Ryan and
Kristen Liu were tied at 5-5 against Marielle Campbell and Joana Sun before the match was called as the doubles point was decided.
In singles play, Yajima, Ryan, and Emhardt were all victorious in their matches. Yajima came out on top against Raynor in a hard-fought, three-set match, 6-4, 6-7(4-7), 7-5, at first singles, while Ryan topped McCarthy 7-5, 6-4 in the second spot. Emhardt earned the third and final point for the Stags with her 6-1, 6-4 victory over Lukin at No. 5 singles. At third singles, Liu was unable to hold off Sun and fell, 6-0, 6-4. Both Ruiz and
Nikki Jackson took their opponents to three sets in hard fought competition at the No. 6 and No. 4 spots, respectively. Ruiz fell to Byron in a close 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 match, while Jackson also won her first set, but was edged by Campbell, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3, to clinch the match for Marist.
As seniors,
Kristen Liu and
Alyssa Ruiz will graduate with two MAAC Championship titles under their belts along with several individual honors. Liu finishes her three-seasons at Fairfield with 86 combined victories while Ruiz joins past Stags, Paulina Rys and Dana Postupack by earning over 100 combined victories. Ruiz completed her four-year career with 111 combined victories. As a team, the Stags end the 2011 season with a 13-8 overall record and a MAAC regular season title for the third consecutive season.
