FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University women's tennis remained undefeated in conference play, and clinched their second-straight MAAC Regular Season title this afternoon  with a 6-1 victory over Siena College on Senior Day on the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts. The Stags improved to 6-0 in the MAAC, and 12-7 overall. Senior Alyssa Ruiz clinched the match for the Stags in her final home match of her career.

Fairfield began the day by taking the doubles point. At the top spot, the freshman duo of Monica Yajima and Caroline Emhardt blanked Jasleen Sandhu and Jessica Asselin, 8-0. In the No. 2 doubles spot, Sharissa Ryan paired with senior Kristen Liu to top Danielle Crill and Carly Holloway in a decisive 8-1 match, while Ruiz and freshman Victoria Pirrello took care of Nicole Ross and Elora Benford, 8-4, in the third spot.

The Stags took five of six singles matches. Yajima won her eighth match in a row with her victory over Sandhu, 7-6(4), 6-0 in the No. 1 spot. Yajima is now 24-4 overall and an undefeated 5-0 in MAAC action. Ryan also improved to an undefeated 6-0 in conference play by defeating Crill, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 2 spot. Liu won her first set, and was tied in the second before having to retire against Siena's Holloway, 6-2, 2-2, at third singles. In the No. 4 spot, Emhardt won her fifth straight with a victory over Asselin, 7-6, 6-4.

Ruiz clinched the win at No. 5 singles by topping Ross, 6-1, 7-6. Ruiz improved to 5-0 in conference action with her fifth straight victory in singles play. Pirrello rounded out the scoring for the Stags by defeating Benford, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.

The Stags, the two-time defending MAAC Champions, will have an opportunity to challenge for a third as the top-seed at the upcoming 2011 MAAC Championships. The event will be held April 20-21 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
