PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Fairfield University women's tennis team topped Villanova 4-3 on the road last night.

The Stags were unable to win a doubles match, but prevailed in four of their singles matches to take the win. In doubles play, Villanova's duo of Mikelle Mancini and Kristin Grobberg topped Sharissa Ryan and Nikki Jackson 8-2 at first doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Monica Yajima and Victoria Pirrello fell to Allison Solberg and Emily Urda 8-4. Rounding out doubles play was Stags duo of Caroline Emhardt and Kristen Liu who fell in a tough fought 8-7(5) match against Amanda Nelson and Alexandra Harding.

In singles play, Ryan topped Mikelle Mancini in a well-played three-set match 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 at first singles. At No. 2 singles, Liu defeated Allison Solberg 6-0, 6-4, while Jackson was victorious over Amanda Nelson 7-5, 6-3. Emhardt fell in a close match to Emily Urda 7-6(5), 6-4 at fourth singles. Alyssa Ruiz clinched the match at No. 5 singles with her decisive 6-0, 6-3 victory over Alexandra Harding 6-0, 6-3. Rounding out singles play was Pirrello at sixth singles who defeated Anne Cognetti in a close three-set match 6-4, 7-6(3), 10-6.

The Stags return to action tomorrow when they take on UMass at the Road Tennis Club at the Hampshire College. Match time is set for 12:30pm. Fans can watch the match on www.umassathletics.com/allaccess.
