Women's Tennis Upends Albany, 5-2

ALBANY, N.Y. – The women's tennis team improved to 4-4 overall with a 5-2 victory over the University at Albany. Sharissa Ryan (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) set the tone for the Stags at first singles with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Susan Ma. Nikki Jackson (Hackensack, N.J.) followed Ryan's lead at the No. 3 spot with a dominating 6-1, 6-0 performance over Sarah Iannone. Alyssa Ruiz (Glen Head, N.Y.) and Victoria Pirrello (Staten Island, N.Y.) were also victorious in their singles matches. Ruiz defeated Melissa Coughlin in a hard fought three-set match, 6-1, 2-6, 10-6 at fifth singles. Pirrello topped Rachel Drake 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot. Kristen Liu (Closter, N.J.) was unable to hold off Laine Mackey, falling 6-2, 7-5 at second singles. At No. 4 singles, Caroline Emhardt (Carmel, Ind.) battled it out, but fell to Aubrey Brooks in a three-set match 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.
The Stags were undefeated in doubles play behind the lead of Liu and Emhardt who finished first in the No. 3 doubles spot. The duo topped Sarah Iannone and Rachel Drake 8-2. Freshmen pair of Monica Yajima (Greenwich, Conn.) and Pirrello finished next with an 8-4 win over Melissa Coughlin and Laine Mackey at second doubles. At No. 1 doubles, Jackson and Ryan topped Susan Ma and Aubrey Brooks 8-4 to close out the scoring for the Stags.
Fairfield University women's tennis team returns to action Wednesday when they host UConn at 3 p.m. It marks the Stags first match of the spring season on the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts.
