WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Fairfield University women's tennis team fell to St. John's 6-1 on Sunday in their second match of the weekend played in West Point, N.Y.
The match was highlighted by the play of freshman
Sharissa Ryan (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) who earned a victory over Joanna Zwirbulis at No. 2 singles. Ryan prevailed in a three-set match 4-6, 6-3, 1-0(11-9).
At No. 1 singles,
Monica Yajima (Greenwich, Conn.) fell in a hard fought three-set match to Nevena Selakovic 2-7, 7-6, 1-0(10-8). At third singles,
Carolina Koladzyn (New York, N.Y.) fell to Ece Firat 6-1, 6-0, while
Kristen Liu (Closter, N.J.) was defeated by Diamond Adams 6-3, 6-0. At No. 5 singles,
Caroline Emhardt (Carmel, Ind.) was topped by Nakita Austin 6-4, 6-3. At sixth singles,
Alyssa Ruiz (Glend Head, N.Y.) fell to Jenny Yonkus 6-4, 6-1.
In doubles play, Stag duo of Koladzyn and Yajima were unable to hold off Diamond Adams and Joanna Zwirbulis and fell 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Ryan and Jackson were also topped in a close 8-6 match to Nakita Austin and Jenny Yonkus. Freshmen pair of
Victoria Pirrello (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Emhardt were defeated by St. John's Nevena Selakovic and Alyssa Liantonio at third doubles.
The Stags now drop to 2-4 overall on the season while St. John's improved to 4-3 with the victory. The Fairfield University women's tennis team returns to action Saturday March 5 when they travel to Jersey City, N.J. to take on Saint Peter's College. The match time is set for 1pm.
