Women's Tennis Topped By Stony Brook, 4-2

STAMFORD, Conn. – The women's tennis team fell to visiting Stony Brook University Friday night. The match was decided in singles play.

Freshmen Monica Yajima (Greenwich, Conn.) and Sharissa Ryan (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) were the only Stags to win their singles match. After falling in a close first set, Yajima came back to top Nini Lagvilava, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. Ryan also came out victorious in a hard fought match as she defeated Stony Brook's Prerana Appineni 7-5, 7-6(5) at No. 2 singles.

At No. 3 singles, senior Kristen Liu (Closter, N.J.) fell to Katherine Hanson, 6-0, 6-2. Sophomore Nikki Jackson (Hackensack, N.J.) was defeated by Gayatri Krishnan, 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 4 spot, while Stony Brook's Chloe Pike topped freshman Caroline Emhardt (Carmel, Ind.) 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. At No. 6 singles, Alyssa Ruiz (Glen Head, N.Y.) split the first two sets with Salome Mkervalidze 6-2, 5-7, but then fell 6-3 in the third set.

The match brings the Stags to 2-1 so far this season, as they defeated Fordham University last weekend. The Fairfield women's tennis team returns to Stamford Indoor Tennis Club for their third straight home match when they host NJIT on February 12 at 7 p.m.
