FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's basketball team will take to the hardwood on Wednesday night when it heads to Drexel University. The game is slated for a 7:30 pm tip and can be heard live over the air at WICC 600 AM or online. Bob Heussler and Joe DeSantis will bring you the game beginning with the pregame show at 7:15 pm.
The Stags will look to build upon its near upset of eighth-ranked University of Connecticut last Thursday night when they were within three points with two minutes to go before falling by a 79-71 count.
Rakim Sanders paced the Fairfield attack with 20 points, one of four Fairfield student-athletes in double figures. Sanders (12 points), and
Desmond Wade (10 points) scored in double figures in the Stags' second-half surge.
Derek Needham and
Sean Crawford also reached double figures in the game with 14 points each. Needham played a pivotal role early in the game, hitting three three-point shots in the opening minutes that kept the Stags close. The Huskies led by as many as 22 points in the second half before coming within three points with the ball at the two-minute mark.
Sanders improved his team-leading scorer average to 16.6 points per game, and remained the team leader with 8.1 rebounds per game.
Ryan Olander and Needham are also averaging in double figures for the season, netting 11.6 and 11.3 points per game. Olander remains one of the top shot blockers in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference with 1.8 rejections per game.
Drexel brings a four-game winning streak into the contest after defeating Binghamton by a 68-44 margin behind a game-high 15 points from Samme Givens. The Dragons' streak started with a 64-60 win over Princeton and also included a 13-point win against NIagara.
Frantz Massenat is the team's top scorer with 13.1 points per game, while Givens paces the team with 6.8 rebounds per game. Damion Lee is the team's top long-range shooter, netting 19 three pointers in 10 games.Massenat represents the team's top passer with 38 assists.
Following this game, Fairfield will return to the Webster Bank Arena for the team's MAAC home opener on January 1 against Canisius College. The game is set for 1 pm.
