Volleyball Blanks Manhattan To Win Sixth-Straight

FAIRFIELD, Conn. –
The Fairfield University volleyball team kept rolling along on Saturday afternoon, knocking off Manhattan College 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-16) at Alumni Hall. The Stags, winners of six straight matches, improve to 7-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play with today's victory.
 
Junior Brianna Dixion posted a match-high 12 kills on .343 hitting to go along with five digs. Senior Kendal Dirkin converted 11 for her 17 attempts for kills to finish with an errorless .647 attack percentage. Dirkin also collected three total blocks. Freshman Caitlin Stapleton notched nine kills and three total blocks.
 
Senior Haililani Pokipala posted 16 digs along with five kills while classmate Lauren Balmert had 10 digs and two aces. Junior Kara Reis tallied four service aces and five digs.
 
Manhattan (11-7; 4-2 MAAC) chipped away at a four-point deficit in the first set to tie the score 17-17. The Stags were able to pull out to a 23-21 advantage, but back-to-back attack errors by Fairfield allowed the Jaspers to get back into it.  With the score tied, 24-24, Manhattan committed a service error and Stapleton followed with a kill to give the Stags the win.
 
After Rachel Romansky gave Fairfield a 17-13 lead with a service ace in the second stanza, Manhattan went on a 5-1 run to tie the score. Stapleton silenced the run with a kill and the Stags never looked back, going on to the 25-21 win.
 
Fairfield opened the third set with by out-scoring Manhattan, 10-3. The Stags would extend their lead to as much as 10 points during the game. Fairfield hit .400 for the set, finishing with 14 kills and just two errors in 30 attempts.
 
Romansky finished had 41 assists, seven digs, and two aces for the Stags.
 
Fairfield returns to MAAC action tomorrow, October 9, when it hosts Saint Peter's College at 2pm.
