FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University volleyball team snapped a three-match skid with a 3-1 (25-18, 14-25, 25-19, 25-22) victory over Saint Peter's College this afternoon in Alumni Hall. Seven Stags were in double figures on the day, including freshman
Rachel Romansky (Denver, Colo.) who was just two kills shy of a triple-double.
Romansky finished the day with eight kills and 45 assists, both of which tied career bests, and set a new personal best with 16 digs. She also had three aces on the day.
Senior
Lauren Hughes (Costa Mesa, Calif.) tallied a match-high 12 kills while freshman
Hayley Moyer (Riverside, Calif.) posted 11 kills on .444 hitting and sophomore
Brianna Dixion (Long Beach, Calif.) finished with 10 kills.
Junior
Bethany Steiger (Cary, Ill.) had a career day for the Stags, finishing with six kills on .357 hitting, six digs, and two total blocks.
Defensively, the Stags notched 86 digs for the match. Sophomore
Kara Reis (Ramona, Calif.) had a team high 18 while junior
Lauren Balmert (Cranberry Twp., Pa.) tallied a season-high 17. Sophomore
Stephanie Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) finished with 12 digs.
There were seven ties and three lead changes early in the first set, but Fairfield (7-13; 6-3 MAAC) went on an 8-3 run to pull ahead, 19-13. Fairfield fought off Saint Peter's (6-14; 2-7 MAAC) the rest of the way for the 25-18 win.
It was all Peahens in the second set, as Katie McFadden served the first nine points of the match to create a hole for the Stags. Junior
Haililani Pokipala (Honolulu, Hawaii) checked in and stopped the run with a kill, but Saint Peter's rolled to the 25-14 win.
Fairfield opened up a 16-10 lead in the third frame, but Saint Peter's crept back. The Peahens cut the deficit to three points on a kill by Phillips to prompt a Stags timeout. Out of the break, the Stags posted three straight points to return the lead to six. Fairfield fended off Saint Peter's for the 25-19 victory.
The fourth set featured 12 ties and three lead changes. With the scored tied, 8-8, the Peahens went on a 4-0 run. The Stags responded with four straight points to tie the match and took the 13-12 lead on a Saint Peter's attack error. The two teams would exchange points until the score rested at 21-21. Moyer came through with a kill to break the tie and Romansky followed with a tap for the two-point advantage. After Fairfield attack error, Pokipala and Hughes closed out the set with back-to-back kills for the 25-22 victory.
Fairfield is back in action tomorrow, October 17, when MAAC rival Siena visits Alumni Hall at 2pm. For fans that can't make it to Sunday's match,
