Golf Opens Action at the 2014 MAAC Championships Friday

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men’s and women’s golf teams will open action at the 2014 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships on Friday, April 25 at Disney’s Palm Golf Course in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.  

The men's championship, played from the blue tees on the par-72, 7,011-yard course, begins at 7:30 a.m. on Friday from the 10th hole. This year, juniors Eric Johnson, Patrick Lynch, Ricky Dowling, and Peter Repetto, sophomore Alex Taylor, and rookie Alex Ferrante will compete for the Stags. The women, hitting from the gold tees on the 6,006-yard course, begin play at 7:40 a.m. on the 1st hole. Juniors Emma Ritzmann and Katie Rockwell, sophomores Michelle Applegate and Sara Quinn, and rookies Jackie Schofield, and Danielle Dalsessandro will compete this year for Fairfield.

The championship will be highlighted on the final day of competition, with the ninth and 18th holes’ action being broadcast live on ESPN3 starting at 10am. The highlights can also be viewed on MAAC.TV.

Last Year at MAACs – Men: At last year’s MAACs, Fairfield placed third overall with a program-best team score of 884. The Stags were only three strokes shy of team champion Loyola University Maryland. Steve Burak shot a MAAC Championship 54-hole record 208 (69-71-68) to become the first Stag to win the McLeod Trophy, for top individual score, in 16 years. Dowling finished in ninth place with a score of 221 (71-73-77) while Lynch finished tied for 11th overall with a three-day score of 227 (77-76-74). Johnson played as an individual and carded a 236(83-76-77) to finish tied for 23rd overall.

Head coach Len Roberto received his third MAAC Coach of the Year award, having previously earned the honor in 2004 and 2008.

Last Year at MAACs – Women: Last year, the women’s golf team placed fifth at the MAAC Championship with a team score of 1,026. The Stags were 89 strokes behind team champion Butler University. Ritzmann was the top finisher for Fairfield with a score of 247 (83-83-81). Olivia Brooks finished tied for 19th with a score of 259 (87-86-86) while Rockwell also finished tied for 19th overall, carding a 259 (90-85-84). Applegate played as an individual and carded a 267 (90-92-85) to finish 27th overall.
