EDISON, N.J. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team grabbed a pair of Metro Conference weekly awards as
Amelie Stewart was named the Metro Offensive Player of the Week and
Mary Grusser was tabbed Rookie of the Week. The pair helped the Stags to two wins on the week, boosting their conference record to a perfect 5-0.
Stewart highlighted the team with three combined goals in Fairfield's two wins including her first career brace in the 2-0 victory at Mount. The sophomore scored both of the team's goals in the second half with both coming from long-range. She rocketed in her first score in the 51st minute while looping in her second in the 81st. She has now scored all five of her goals in her five conference matches.
She becomes the 12th different Stag to earn an Offensive Player of the Week award under Head Coach
David Barrett.
"Amelie was outstanding this week," Coach Barrett said. "She found the net against Iona, then scored two terrific goals at Mount St. Mary's to lead us to a road win. She's playing with confidence and making a real impact for our team. This recognition is well deserved."
Grusser netted her first collegiate goal in Fairfield's 6-1 win over Iona, capping Fairfield's offensive performance. Grusser drove past the defense and unleashed a strike in the back of the net in the 78th minute to complete the scoring.
She becomes the 13th different Stag - and second this season – under Coach Barrett.
"Mary has brought great energy and confidence to our attack," Coach Barrett said. "It was exciting to see her score her first collegiate goal against Iona, and this recognition is a terrific reward for the work she's putting in. We're excited about the impact she's already making."
The pair helped the Stags improve their perfect Metro record to 5-0 maintaining their first-place position in the standings. Fairfield also extended their conference regular season unbeaten streak to 19-straight which also includes 33 of their last 34 league matches.
The Stags will look to keep these streaks alive when they visit Marist on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 7pm.
