EMMITSBURG, Md. – Amelie Stewart rocketed in two long-range range goals in the 51st and 81st minutes, leading the Fairfield University Women's Soccer team to a 2-0 victory over the Mount on Saturday afternoon. The win keeps Fairfield's Metro Conference record perfect at 5-0 and extends the team's regular season conference unbeaten streak to 19-straight matches.
"It was the type of game we expected and we did a good job of keeping the ball and creating chances," Head Coach
David Barrett said. "Thank goodness Amelie was on point with her finishing today."
Stewart's first long-range score came in the 51st minute as she took in a tapped pass from
Cassidy Clinton into the top right corner of the net for her fourth goal of the season. Clinton's assist was her first helper of the campaign as she became the 13th different player who has tallied at least one point this season.
She completed her first career brace with a looping goal late in the second half, taking a pass from
Bella Bingham for the 2-0 final score.
For the match, the Stags put up 42 shots, improving their league-leading tally to over 20 attempts per match. Twenty one of those attempts were on goal with the two Mount goalkeepers combining for 19 saves. Fairfield came into the match as the best offensive team in the Metro, leading the conference in: goals, assists, points, and shots.
The Stags totaled 18 shots and eight corner kicks over the first half with five different players tallying an attempt. Fairfield was fairly accurate with eight of those attempts on target, but the Mount goalkeeper needed only a couple of quality saves including a diving save off an
Ella Pisani shot in the 39th minute.
Fairfield's best chance in the first stanza came off the right foot of
Payton Zaun whose low show went off the side post in the 41st minute.
Fairfield kept the offensive pressure up with their first shot of the second half coming just two minutes into the stanza when
Ashlyn Walsh tapped a cross from Bingham that forced a diving stop from the keeper.
Brooke Kennedy also forced a diving stop from the keeper off a deflected shot just minutes after Stewart's first tally.
The victory extends Fairfield's conference regular season unbeaten streak to 19-straight and the Stags have now taken at least a point in 33 of their last 34 regular season conference matches.
The Stags will stay on the road for a Wednesday night match at Marist with a 7pm kickoff.
