Stags Power Past Marist For Fifth-Straight Win

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team's balanced offensive attack powered through five goals in the Stags' 5-1 road victory at Marist. Six different student-athletes tallied a point with four different goal scorers. Payton Zaun set a career-high with three assists while Ashley McMahon led the scorers with a pair of goals. Ashlyn Walsh netted her third goal of the year while Charlyse Berry notched her first as a Stag. The victory moves the squad to 6-0 in Metro Conference play as they remain the lone unbeaten team.

"It was quite a game," Head Coach David Barrett said. "Marist plays an unusual style of soccer, very high pressing and relentless. I thought we responded down a goal effectively. We weathered some storms. Our defenders played hard, our goalkeeper played well. We'll take the road performance and head home."

The Stags had to rally down a goal and responded with five unanswered. Amelie Stewart started the scoring when Zaun sent in a corner kick that was deflected by Brooke Kennedy and found the right foot of Stewart for her fifth goal in Metro play.

McMahon capped the half with two scores in a three-minute span. McMahon sent in a penalty kick after a hand ball in the 15th minute and struck in a free kick in the 21st.

The Stags finished the scoring with a pair of goals in the second. Ashlyn Walsh scored off her rebounded shot in the 66th and Charlyse Berry snuck in the fifth with a looping attempt in the 77th on a pass from Zaun and Kelly O'Connor.

Fairfield now has 15 different players with at least one point.

The five goals was the third time this season the Stags scored five or more goals. Fairfield came in as the top offensive team in the Metro, leading the conference in points, goals, assists, and shots.

The win keeps the Stags as the lone unbeaten team in the Metro with a 6-0 record. They also extend their regular season unbeaten streak in conference play to 20-straight which includes 34 of their last 35 games.

Fairfield will look to keep those streaks alive when they host Merrimack on Saturday at 1pm.
