FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A late rally ended up being the difference for the Fairfield University softball as the University of New Haven scored two run in the sixth inning and added another in the top of the seventh to come away with a 3-2 win over the Stags.
Fairfield seemed to be on task behind starting pitcher
Peyton Shields as the right hander kept the visiting team in check through her initial four innings of work. Shields surrendered five hits over those four frames but was able to get outs when she needed them most, keeping the Chargers off the scoreboard through four innings.
The Stags were able to pick up a pair of runs during her time in the circle, plating a run in the second and fourth innings to build a 2-0 lead. After
Delaney Whieldon opened the second inning with a single, outfielder
Lauren Osland sent a pitch over the right fielder's head for a triple, bringing home the game's first run.
The advantage went to two runs in the fourth inning, a rally that started with a lead off single by
Anna Paravati. Whieldon sent her teammates to second with a bunt, setting up
Sarah Bielski's RBI single down the right field line.
Chela Kovar earned the nod in the pitching circle to start the fifth inning and surrendered only a two-out single to keep her team's lead intact.
Fairfield nearly tacked more runs onto the scoreboard, loading the bases off singles from
Martina Gutierrez and Danica Silverstri as well as an error. The inning ended on a fielder's choice grounder to third base, keeping the deficit at two runs..
The Chargers were able to rally with a single, a walk, and another single to cut the lead in half, 2-1. A pitching change yielded a walk to load the bases before Shields was summoned back to the circle with one out in the sixth.
Shields was able to retire the two batters she faced but one of those outs tied the score with a sacrifice fly. In the top of the seventh inning, Shields surrendered a lead off home run to Brianna Truman that proved to be the difference in the game.
Seven different Fairfield student-athletes picked up a hit in the game with Armuth pacing the offense with two singles.
Fairfield will head to Canisius University this weekend for a three-game series in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play. The format for the series has changed to a single game on Saturday afternoon beginning at 1 pm and a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 11 am.
