Box Score 3 WEST POINT, N.Y.-It was a busy weekend of action for the Fairfield University women's tennis team, as the Stags took part in the three-day West Point Invitational Tournament that took place from Friday through Sunday, September 26-28. The event was played in a "hidden duals" format meaning no team scores were kept, as Fairfield took on competitors from FDU, Fordham and NJIT on Friday; Sacred Heart, FDU and Army on Saturday; plus Army, Sacred Heart and NJIT on Sunday.
Over the course of the three days, Maeve Cassidy and Lily Malinowski led head coach Jeff Bricker's squad in singles' victories with two apiece, and in doubles, the duo of Sophia Harris and Regina Herrera added a pair of wins to lead the team on the weekend.
Friday was a day of double's action only, and Sophia Harris and Regina Herrera earned their first victory of the tournament defeating their opponents from NJIT, 8-6.
On Saturday, singles' action was in full bloom, and Fairfield players earned a total of eight victories as Sophia Harris, Lily Malinowski, Sarah Liu, Maria Gell, Maeve Cassidy, Meg Harding and Regina Herrera all earned wins.
Cassidy had two triumphs on Saturday topping FDU's Katsiaryna Kostina, 8-5, and Sacred Heart's Olivia Furrows, 8-6.
Sunday saw both singles and doubles play taking place, and the Stags received singles wins from Anna Neyestani and Lily Malinowski, who both defeated players from NJIT, and Fairfield had three doubles victories on the final day of action in West Point, as the teams of Meg Harding and Maeve Cassidy, Sophia Harris and Regina Herrera plus Anna Neyestani and Maria Gell, all earned wins.
Up next, the Fairfield women's tennis team will be in action in the three-day MAAC Masters Tournament that is slated to begin on Friday, October 3.
