HAMDEN, Conn. – Maria Gell and
Victoria Mandma won two matches on Saturday to advance to Sunday's championship round of the Metro Conference Masters Tournament.
Regina Herrera also won a quarterfinal match on Saturday but was upended in the semifinal round.
Gell and Mandma started their day with a 6-3 win over Niagara's duo of Valeria Margarita Mora Alvarez and Larisa Kotok. In the semifinal round, the Fairfield pair downed Quinnipiac's Nola Jones and Caroline, also by a 6-3 tally.
The third-seeded duo in the tournament, Gell and Mandma will challenge top-seeded Quinnipiac tandem Willow Renton and Caitlin Flower in Sunday's final round. The match is set for 9:30 AM and will be followed by the singles final featuring the Bobcats' Renton and Flower going head-to-head.
Also on the doubles courts on Saturday,
Sophia Harris and
Anna Neyestani were bested by Siena's Zaara Omar and Andrea Vargas, 6-1.
In singles play, sixth-seeded
Regina Herrera downed Marist's third-seed Caterina Assi by a 7-6 (5), 6-2 tally in the quarterfinals by fell to Renton, the second seed, in a tiebreaker in the semifinals, 6-0, 1-6, 1-0 (10-5).
The singles and doubles winners of the Metro Conference Masters will represent the Metro in the ITA Conference Masters Championship on Nov. 5-8 in Rome, Ga.
