HAMDEN, Conn. – Regina Herrera and a pair of Fairfield University Women's Tennis doubles teams won their Round of 16 matches to advance to Saturday's quarterfinal round of the Metro Conference Masters Tournament. The conference-wide event is emanating from Quinnipiac University this weekend.
Herrera flew past Merrimack's Laetizia Borjara by a score of 6-0, 6-0 to roll into the quarterfinal round. The sixth-seeded Herrera will meet Marist's Caterina Assi – the tournament's third-seeded player – on Saturday morning.
Also in the singles bracket, eighth-seed
Anna Neyestani fell in a tiebreaker to Iona's Lara Lanno by a count of 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (8).
Fairfield went 2-for-2 in the doubles draw, starting with Neyestani and
Sophia Harris knocking off crosstown Sacred Heart duo Ava Nelson and Malena del Olmo, 6-2.
Maria Gell and
Victoria Mandma will join them in the quarterfinals after a 6-2 win over Kasia Domagala and Miranda Ericson from Merrimack.
All advancing players and teams will compete in the Semifinals later in the day on Saturday. The singles and doubles championships will be held on Sunday.
The singles and doubles winners of the Metro Conference Masters will represent the Metro in the ITA Conference Masters Championship on Nov. 5-8 in Rome, Ga.
