Women’s Soccer Supports Avery’s Little Army on Friday

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team will help support Avery's Little Army and the organization's fight against pediatric brain cancer starting with their home game against Harvard on Friday. The Stags will be donating $10 per goal this season and will present the game ball to Avery's family before the match against Harvard on Friday at 6pm.

This will be the second season that the Stags have partnered with Avery's Little Army, an organization founded to honor Avery Lafferty, a talented young midfielder with a gift for finding the back of the net and more importantly bringing her team together.  She played each game with passion, intensity and smile on her face.

Just over three years ago Avery was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor when she was only 9 years old.  She suffered through setbacks with 4 brain surgeries, radiation and targeted experimental chemotherapy, but through it all she rebelled again her cancer and continued to find her way back to the pitch and her team that she loved.  When Avery's cancer spread, and she took her last breath, her team and thousands of young players put their "Cleats Out for Avery" to celebrate her spirit and determination.

Echoing Avery's determination, Avery's Little Army was established to help others in their fight against cancer with a mission to honor an exceptionally brave cancer rebels by striving to advance pediatric cancer research, provide support to families battling and raise awareness.

The Stags have already tallied seven goals this year, the most in the MAAC. Fairfield placed in the top-10 in the nation last season with 52 total goals. The squad will begin a weekend homestand, hosting Harvard on Friday and FDU on Sunday.
