Softball Drops Series Finale Against Saint Peter's

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University softball team dropped the series finale against Saint Peter's University by a 3-0 count at Alumni Softball Field.

All three runs scored on one swing that came off the bat of Jess Forte in the top of the second inning. Pitcher Alyssa Weinberg was able to escape a bases-loaded jam in the first inning but was not as fortunate in inning two.

The Peacocks were able to fill the bases with three singles including a bunt base hit with only one out. After inducing a foul ball pop out for the second out, Forte stepped into the batter's box and hit the first pitch to the base of the left-center field fence, chasing all three runners home.

A pitching change brought Peyton Shields into the circle and the right hander responded by not allowing a runner past second base in addition to scattering a pair of hits over her five-plus scoreless innings. Shields fanned two batters and yielded just two hits during her time in the circle.

Fairfield tried to rally on several occasions but Saint Peter's pitcher Ava White was able to work her way out of trouble each time. The first opportunity came in the third inning when Charli Warren laced a two-out triple but was left stranded after a ground out ended the frame.

Ava Armuth placed a double to left center field in the fourth inning to create another scoring chance but the next two hitters were unable to advance her beyond third base. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Morgan Sylvestre and pinch hitter Alivia Macaluso each registered a single to put runners on the corners before a ground out and a fly out ended the threat.

The sixth inning continued the Stags' trend when Anna Paravati and Armuth opened with base hits to start the inning. Christina Minor reached on a fielder's choice when the pitcher recorded an out at third base off a grounder. The threat came to a halt with a double play ball that retired the side without any damage.

The Stags managed to put a runner on base in the seventh inning courtesy of Macaluso's second single of the game, but the team was unable to push her across home plate.

Fairfield played its final home game of the campaign this afternoon as the schedule sends the Stags to Iona for a doubleheader on Tuesday before ending the regular season with a three-game series at Quinnipiac. The Stags and the Bobcats will meet for a twin bill on Friday before playing the third game on Saturday afternoon.
