EDISON, N.J. – The MAAC Regular Season Champions and top-seeded Fairfield University Women's Soccer team was well-represented on this year's list of postseason honors, taking home four major awards while 10 student-athletes garnered All-MAAC recognition. For the second-straight season, striker
Maddy Theriault was awarded the MAAC Golden Boot. On the defensive side,
Meghan Carragher was named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year while goalkeeper
Katie Wright earned MAAC Golden Glove honors. Finally, as the leader of the Stags, Head Coach
David Barrett was named the MAAC Coach of the Year for the third time in his career and for the second-straight season.
The Stags also set a program record with 10 All-MAAC selections with Theriault,
Sam Kersey,
Payton Zaun, Carragher,
Brooke Walonis, and Wright all earning a spot on the All-MAAC First Team. Sophomore striker
Ashley McMahon garnered All-MAAC Second Team accolades while
Ashlyn Walsh,
Kayleigh Lukasik, and
Cassidy Clinton picked up selections on the Third Team.
"It is a tremendous honor for our players to be selected for these major awards and for 10 of our players to make an All MAAC team," Head Coach
David Barrett said. "I know we have a lot of really good players, and obviously I'm biased in my assessment. I'm really happy for the players and proud to coach them and have them as part of our program."
Theriault earned the MAAC Golden Boot award for the second-straight season, becoming the seventh player in conference history (and the third Stag) to receive multiple Player of the Year awards during her career. The senior finished the regular season as the MAAC leader in both points (34) and goals (15) which also ranks in the top-10 in the country. Her 15 scores ties for the third-most in a single season in program history and she has also scored in six-straight matches, the longest streak of her career. She has also tallied six game-winning goals which is one shy of Army West Point's Brigid Duffy for the national lead. Theriault receives her fourth-straight appearance on the All-MAAC First Team.
"She has been the most dominant player in the league over the past two seasons," Coach Barrett said. "Literally, every single team must strategize for her and we see it materialize in lots of creative ways. It's not easy for her, to be honest, and she has found ways to respond and still be dangerous and help her teammates even when she isn't scoring. I'm really proud of her growth over the past four years."
Carragher has been the consistent force on the Fairfield back line all season, leading all field players with 1,554 minutes played. She has anchored a back line that has surrendered just 11 goals all season, the 12th fewest in Division I. She has also helped limit the opponent's chances with Fairfield foes averaging just 8.5 shots per game with 3.3 of those on target. In conference matches, the defensive unit holds a 0.50 goals against average and 7.4 shots per game. Carragher makes her third appearance on an All-MAAC Team and her second on the First Team.
"Meg has had a really great run in her career developing into a really great player," Coach Barrett said. "She is not just a defender, she is a soccer player. I am really glad the other coaches in the league have been able to recognize the achievement we see daily."
Wright minded the net for 16 matches while posting a 13-1-2 record with four shutouts. She also recorded a 0.71 goals against average, the lowest of her career and the 38th best in the country. She became the program's all-time wins leader earlier this season and has now posted 53 wins and 22 shutouts in her career. She also picked up a spot on the All-MAAC First Team for the first time in her career.
"Katie has worked really hard and finally is getting the recognition she deserves," Coach Barrett said. "Sometimes it is tough being a very good goalkeeper on a great team as you don't get a lot of action or attention. But the position is critical to our success, and every big game we need to have 2-3 moments where our keeper comes up big for us. Katie has always stood tall in those moments and I think the distinction is quite deserved."
Coach Barrett has led the Stags to the third-highest winning percentage in Division I which also includes a 16-match unbeaten streak which is the second-longest in the nation. Fairfield went unbeaten during the MAAC Regular Season with a 10-0-2 mark, becoming the sixth Stags team in program history to accomplish the feat and the first since the 2002 squad. Fairfield also went unbeaten at home for the second-straight season with an 8-0-1 record on Lessing Field, extending their unbeaten streak to 25-straight on campus. Over the past two seasons, Fairfield holds the highest winning percentage in the country with their 33-4-3 mark while also holding an 18-match unbeaten streak against conference opponents.
The Stags also set a program record with 10 different student-athletes being named to All-MAAC teams. Aside from the three major award winners, Kersey, Zaun, and Walonis were all selected to the All-MAAC First Team.
Kersey earned her second-straight First Team honors after setting a career-high with six goals and 13 points during the regular season. Five of those scores came during MAAC play including a pair of goals in the road win over Rider. She also recorded three points against Iona with a goal and an assist.
Zaun was the lone rookie selected to the All-MAAC First Team after posting eight points on three goals and two assists during her freshman season. All three of her goals have come in the last four outings including the game-winner against Manhattan. She also earned two MAAC Rookie of the Week awards.
In her first season with the Stags, Walonis recorded five points on a pair of goals and one assist. Both of her goals came in MAAC play, netting tallies against Sacred Heart and Manhattan. She was also part of the Fairfield back line that put up a .611 goals against average, the 12th best number in the nation.
Ashley McMahon picked up a spot on the All-MAAC Second Team after netting eight goals and dishing out three assists in her first season with the Stags. She recorded a point in nine of her 12 MAAC contests while tallying a goal against seven different conference foes. She ranks fifth in the MAAC with her eight scores while placing sixth with 19 points.
The Stags got a trio on the All-MAAC Third Team with Walsh, Lukasik, and Clinton all receiving the honors. Walsh ranked third in the MAAC and 13th in the country with nine assists, the most by any Stag since 2008. She dished out six of those helpers in a three-match span, including tying a Lessing Field record with three assists against Sacred Heart.
Lukasik started 15 matches during her sophomore season, while scoring a pair of goals in the midfield. Both of her scores came at home, touching the back of the net against FDU and converting a long strike against Manhattan.
Clinton received All-MAAC Third Team accolades after being a consistent presence as a defensive back this season. She helped limit the opponent to just 8.5 shots per game with 3.3 of those on target. In conference matches, the defensive unit holds a 0.50 goals against average and 7.4 shots per game.
With their second-straight MAAC Regular Season Championship, the Stags earned the tournament's top-seed and will host Sacred Heart on Thursday night at 6pm.
