FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men's soccer team finishes its two-game season-opening road trip with a match at FDU on Monday night. The Stags and the Knights will meet at University Stadium on the Teaneck campus beginning at 7 pm.
Both teams opened their season last week with Fairfield falling to Monmouth University Friday while FDU hosted and edged Manhattan University on Thursday.
The Stags put forth a strong effort against Monmouth but came up on the short end of a 4-0 decision. Fairfield managed five shots in the game and put ample pressure on the Hawks especially in the first half.
Kris Naicker and
William Pierce accounted for the team's three shots in the opening 45 minutes. It wasn't until late in the half that Monmouth was able to break through with a pair of goals which came just three minutes apart.
Fairfield's efficiency continued in the second half with two more shots, giving the visiting team four shots on goal in their five attempts. Monmouth struck quickly again in the first half with a pair of goals just five minutes apart which finished off the scoring.
FDU was involved in a back-and-forth match with the Jaspers last week, leading in the game three times. The Knights' Alex Kryazhev scored a pair of goals, the first coming in the 18
th minute and the second putting his team back in front at 2-1 in the 50
th minute. After Manhattan tied the math in the 63
rd minute, Nk Tima posted the game-winning goal in the 77
th minute to produce the 3-2 final.
Fairfield and FDU goalkeepers were kept busy on their opening night as Stags keeper
Viktor Nikolov made four saves from the 13 shots he faced over his 90 minutes of work. Knights goalkeeper Spencer King registered three stops off Manhattan's 12 attempts in the match.
"FDU is coming off a win and I am sure they will up for the match," Head Coach
Krystian Witkowski said. "But the most important question we will answer is how will we outcompete against the opponent. Our boys have every bit of fight in them to keep going and I'm very excited for them to move to the next game and show what they are really made of."
The Stags will finally get a chance to play in front of the home fans following the FDU match, hosting Lafayette College on Saturday, August 31 and Stonehill College on Wednesday, September 4 at Lessing Field. Both matches are slated for a 7 pm start. On the other side, FDU will make its first trips away from its campus when the team heads to Navy for an August 30 match, the first of four straight road dates for the Knights.
