Box Score EMMITSBURG, Md.-It was a strong opening to the 2024 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference schedule for the Fairfield University women's tennis team on Sunday afternoon, as the Stags rolled to a 6-1 road victory over Mount Saint Mary's University. With the victory, Fairfield is now 3-7 overall to go along with that 1-0 MAAC mark; while the Mount slips to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in conference action.
A strong showing in doubles set the tone for the Stags' win on Sunday, as the team grabbed the doubles point behind wins from the duos of Lily Malinowski and Francesca Karman at number two (6-4) and Laina Campos and Nicolette Loeffler in the three spot (6-1).
In singles play on Sunday, Fairfield posted wins from the number two through the number six flights, as Katarina Plumtree prevailed at number two (6-2, 6-1), Nicolette Loeffler won at three (6-3, 6-3), Francesca Karman triumphed at number three (6-3, 7-6 (4), Lily Malinowski continued her winnings ways at number five (6-3, 6-0) and Maeve Cassidy earned a three-set, super tiebreaker victory at number six.
"Just like the men, the women played with a ton of energy and focus from the first point to last point on Sunday to open conference play. Great energy in doubles paved the way," said head coach Jeff Bricker.
It will a quick turnaround for the Fairfield women's tennis team as the Stags are right back in action on Monday afternoon hosting local rival Sacred Heart University in a non-conference match slated to begin at 3:00 p.m. on the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts.
