ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Fairfield University men's and women's swimming and diving teams finished up their first day at the
ECAC Championships hosted by the United States Naval Academy. The men's team checked out on day one with 53 team points which currently places seventh out of 15 scoring teams. The women's team did not score any team points today but competed in just two individual events.
The men's relay teams both reached the scoring column with an eighth-place finish in the 200 free relay and a seventh-place swim in the 400 medley relay. Oliver McLaughlin, Tim Regan, Nicholas Besgen, and Alex Sirkowa posted a time of 1:23.24 in the 200 free relay while McLaughlin, Jeffrey Vlass, Regan, and Joseph Stewart completed the 400 medley relay in 3:21.85.Â
Individually, the men's team competed in four events beginning with the 500 free as Joey Nizzardo completed his time in the pool by touching the wall in 4:46.42 in his preliminary swim. Stewart secured a second-place finish in the B final and 10th overall based on his first in the 200 IM, taking the distance in 1:51.10.
Vlass also entered the event and came away with a preliminary time of 1:55.50.Â
The men's 50 free included four Stags with
Sirkowa posting the best finish in 21.11 during the preliminary swim. Tim Regan was not far behind his teammate with his time of 21.43 while McLaughlin (21.45) and Besgen (21.46) rounding out the Fairfield entries.
For the women, Abbie DiGregorio was the Stags' lone representative in the 500 free, completing the distance in 5:20.26 during the preliminary round. Tone
Sandsjo (25.08) and
Shauna Harney (25.96) competed in the 50 free during the event.
The Fairfield swimming and diving teams will continue their run at the
ECAC Championships on Saturday as the 200 medley relay, the 400 IM, the 100 fly, the 200 free, the 100 breast, the 100 back and the 800 free relay are on the docket for day two.
